This car is probably too low anyway for when or if it snows. I just bought a gti, so I kinda see from both sides. The fiesta is fun and would obviously beat the gti on the track but gti is a great all around daily driver which is what I want right now. Didn't look at the focus st because I didn't want another ford, wanted a change. Nothing
According to people on the Focus forums, yes. There are a ton of automatic Focii and Fiestas that work just fine, but you don't hear about them like you hear about ones with problems. Mine is at 30k miles and hasn't had a problem. That said, it still is not a great gearbox.
Fiesta is likely to be lower cost of ownership (cheaper maintenance plus better mpg), focus can have equipment not available on fiesta (eg electric rear windows). Look at the individual cars though - both have been in production for many years at many trim levels.
On average they got 8-14mpg in city traffic. Since it’s cost the company so much money in down time and rental cars, we’ve since stopped using all Ford products. I have never heard anything good about the Ford Escape. Friends who had them were plagued with constant issues.

I don't know about typical used car prices in the U.S., but $7300 for a Ford Fiesta with that mileage seems quite steep to me. In terms of reliability, Fiesta from that generation are reliable if and only if they have the manual transmission. The PowerShift automatic is garbage, don't buy it. The manual is perfectly fine.
With that budget you can hardly be ruling out options for looks especially when the Focus of the gen in budget is hideous. The 1.33 pre 2013 Auris is problematic due to valve seals. 1.6 is much better. So the Auris is ruled out for engine size. 2013- Auris is out of budget. 2012- early MK9 Civic is doable with high mileage with the 1.4.
